I picked this one up used on Reverb. Despite already having some similar pedals. Sounds awesome!

Robert Keeley first made his name by doing mods on popular pedals making them much better sounding and quieter. One of the pedals that he was famous for improving was the the very popular Boss Blues Driver pedal. Keeley’s “phat” mod added some low end to the mostly full-range Blues Driver and, despite the Boss pedal’s reputation as a “transparent” overdrive. The Phat Mod is a loved tone for many players. It has a natural break-up and the dynamics that made this modified pedal stay on many player’s boards with some never turning it off.

The Keeley Super Phat Mod pedal is now perfected with amazing sounding JFETs that emulate old tube amp stages, tube amp tone stacks, and a variety of tone shaping circuits that bring out the best in any guitar’s pickups. Keeley has made their acclaimed overdrive circuit even better with the Super Phat Mod pedal. Just like the original, it breaks up sweetly like a tube amp. And with an updated JFET gain circuit.

The Super Phat Mod is Keeley’s in-house take on the Blues Driver following the original pedal’s topology but upgrading some of key components.

Keeley Super Phat Mod Overdrive Pedal Features:

  • Dynamic overdrive with full-range response
  • Adds tube-like breakup and harmonic saturation without altering your core tone
  • Flat mode offers flat response, while Phat mode adds a subtle bass boost
  • Extremely touch responsive, cleans up nicely with your guitar’s volume knob
  • Controls for Level, Tone, and Drive

From Keeley:
The Skinny on the Phat History

The Keeley BD-2 was the first mod that had a switch. It was done to give players two modes of bass response, with the slight boost it was called the Phat mode. Perfect for players of Strats and Teles that wanted just a small push without being muddy. That same design is also available via the micro toggle on the Super Phat Mod. Later on we released the Luna Overdrive which won a Gear of the Year award in England and that pedal had further refinements made to it and became the Katana Blue Drive. The Katana Blues Drive still retained the active bass and treble controls but smoothed out the highs and increased the gain range slightly. That was an original design designed to meet many of the tonal characteristics of the Blues Driver. The new Super Phat Mod takes of by duplicating the Keeley Phat Mod part-for-part with the exception of our new “super JFETs”. We think you’ll enjoy this incredible tone we have crafted for you.
