I have owned several Danos over the years and I could not pass this one up when I saw a major guitar retailer blowing these out at great prices on eBay. I snatched this one up. Love the color!

The innovation of Nathan Daniel and what he was able to build with very modest materials and simplistic designs is pretty awesome. Like Leo Fender, Nat Daniel was not a guitar player and sought out suggestions and feedback from players. Masonite and laminated wood with the famous “lipstick” single coil pickups and metal nut make Danelectro iconic guitars at modest prices. More on Danelectro history here.

This new guitar for 2015 is called Danelectro ’59 Modified New Old Stock because it features Lipstick pickups actually made in 1999. Yes, I agree a bit of a dubious vintage claim… but still a very nice Danelectro guitar.

“The story goes… Danelectro’s pickup supplier “misplaced” a load of lipstick pickups in their warehouse only to discover them recently 15 years after they were manufactured.

When the folks at Danelectro listened to them they realized that these “New Old Stock” wonders have more twang than any Lipstick ever. Is it because of the aged magnets? Or the materials used 15 years ago? Who knows. Who cares. They just sound great.

So they took their flagship 59M model, with the tuneable die-cast bridge, and installed these 15-year-old wonders…and voila…the best sounding, best playing Dano ever. The bad news? Quantities are limited. So snag yours today. Made in Korea (fabulous build quality).”

Adjustable bridge

Adjustable bridge

Danelectro is building some of the best guitars in years in my opinion. They have made some nice improvements in the hardware on their current lineup. The adjustable wrap around bridge is a nice improvement over the old metal-rosewood bridges on the original Danelectro guitars as many of these suffer from bridge issues where it will bow and lose its shape and intonation is hard to achieve. The new bridge also seems to add to the twang.

As with most Danelectro guitars this guitar is pretty light as it has a hollow body weighing in at 6-lbs 1.5-ozs. Sounds awesome and plays great. The action and setup was good right out of the box. Amazing for a guitar at this price point. I sometimes feel I stole it for the low cost of these guitars as it is a lot of fun to play.

From the Danelectro site:
In 1956, a small company from New Jersey invented an entirely new guitar. Its “signature tone” changed music forever.

Now Danelectro® is back with more tone and better playability than ever. 100% set up in California, these new Danelectros will astound you!
