One of things that affects fuzz pedals, especially vintage style Germanium transistor ones, is the power. Running these types of pedals on pedal power supplies or Alkaline/Lithium batteries can greatly affect the way they sound. Carbon, old style batteries like to can buy in the Dollar Store are different as they can add “sag” to the power on demand and mimic more of what an old tube amp would do. They generally sound better.

Several manufacturers are now offering an external battery box that contains a relay that can sense pedal power. When connected the pedal is actually running on the batteries inside the battery box not the power supply. The relay sensor just turns off the battery power when it sees the pedal power turn off. Great so you do not have to disconnect the cables when packing up your gear or finding a dead battery if you forget. Also makes swapping out batteries much easier than opening each pedal.

Using Dollar Store variety 9V carbon batteries over a DC power supply because of the sag and “amp-like” quality they impart on overdrive, distortion, fuzz, and wah pedals actually sounds better.

Temperature can also affect the sound of fuzz pedals. BUT daisy-chain power, pedal DC power and where you place the fuzz in your chain can affect much more! Good news is the old style Carbon batteries are less expensive Alkaline or Lithium and last a long time in most of these pedals.

Perfectly fine to run your less sensitive effect pedals on the pedalboard power. In fact, the larger power demand digital pedals have no practical battery option.

The four vintage Germanium transistors are getting harder and harder to find in any quality as they have not been made in many years as they have been replaced by Silicon transistors. The magic of the Kingtone Vintage Fuzz is that it contains both sets of AC128 and NKT275 Germanium transistors and allows you to even mix and match the combinations via two switches.

The switches open up huge tonal possibilities. The switches allow you to select between two of the most popular types used in great classic fuzz circuits. The AC128’s give a smooth softer fuzz with slightly lower gain. The NKT275’s offer a brighter more aggressive fuzz tone. You can also use a mixture of AC128s and NKT275s for even more tone options. Along with an easy to access bias control it have many options and versatility in the great fuzz tones you can get.

The design of the pedal not only looks great on your pedal board but is also very solidly constructed. Hand wired on a carefully designed custom PCB. This pedal uses rare vintage components and produces the classic fuzz tones heard and loved for decades and gives you more clarity, more playability, more low end and a more controllability, all this without sacrificing the classic fuzz tone. This maybe the best fuzz pedal I have tried and I feel great that I was able to snag one.

Placing the Kingtone Duellist in front of the Vintage Fuzz into a clean amp can produce heavenly class sounds and put a big smile on your face.
